TPG co buys KPO firm PharmArc

CHENNAI/MUMBAI: TPG Capital-owned IMS Health has acquired knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) start-up PharmArc Analytics Solutions.

Connecticut-based IMS Health, one of the leading technology services firms in the healthcare sector, has acquired the entire shareholding of the KPO firm in which Baring Private Equity Partners was the largest shareholder.

IMS Health is jointly owned by TPG Capital, Leonard Green & Partners and CPP Investment Board, an arm of the Canadian Pension Plan, managing assets worth over $152 billion. The acquisition of the six-yearold Bangalore firm PharmArc will help IMS to scale up its analytics business.

PharmArc's CEO Amit Sadana confirmed the transaction with IMS Health, but did not divulge any financial details.

"PharmArc has relationships with the top 20 global pharmaceutical firms and it was a good fit with IMS Health. We decided, along with the promoters , that the transaction is in the best interest of all the parties at this stage," said Keshav Misra of Baring Private Equity Partners.

PharmArc, with a team of over 250 analysts, provides marketing analytics and business consulting services to global pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

Techie commits suicide, BPO employed fiancee held

Bangalore: A 32-year-old employee of the BPO firm of a software concern was today remanded to judicial custody for allegedly abetting the suicide of his fiancee, a software firm employee.

Allan Sandeep, who was arrested yesterday, had allegedly been demanding dowry from his fiancee Savitha Venkatappa (25), who allegedly committed suicide on Jan 19, police said.

Savitha allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in Ganganagar last week and her parents had filed a criminal case against Sandeep.

Though Savitha left no suicide note, her family alleged she was dejected after her engagement with Sandeep did not materialise in marriage.

Police say they would probe the digital evidence in their possession, such as mobile phone call details, SMS details, emails and chatting information, and also financial transactions between Savitha and Sandeep.

After their engagement, Sandeep had allegedly been demanding dowry from Savitha besides avoiding her for the past couple of months. He also allegedly demanded a car. Following his demands, a depressed Savitha allegedly took her own life, police said.

Philippines BPO Industry Not Worried About 'U.S. Jobs Back Onshore' Initiative

Americans watching President Obama's State of the Union address last night heard a lot of things but one thing that stood out was his urging of American businesses to bring jobs back to the U.S. Last week, the President said he wants to eliminate tax breaks for companies that outsource.

 If you're an unemployed American, that's good news. If you're a company that outsources a lot of jobs, it may be making you squirm a little. And if you're a nation that takes a lot of offshored jobs, you may be a little anxious.

The Business Processing Association of the Philippines – a nation which takes a critical mass of U.S. call center business – said it's not concerned, point out that outsourcing has allowed U.S. companies to survive the global financial crunch by lowering costs and to expand — thereby creating more jobs for Americans, according to the Associated Press (News - Alert). The BPAP's spokesman, Martin Crisostomo, said that outsourcing is inseparable from globalization and a business model that helps companies cut costs.

But coming down the pike may be more than just disapproval for companies that outsource jobs.

A bill submitted to the U.S. House of Representatives last month, called the “Call Center and Consumers Protection Bill” (HB 3596) by sponsors Reps. Tim Bishop (D-NY), David McKinley (R-WV) and Mike Michaud (D-TX), if enacted, would require overseas call center employees to disclose their location to U.S. consumers, and it would give customers the right to be transferred to a U.S.-based call center if they wish.

Any company failing to do so would incur fines of $10,000 per day. The bill would also require the U.S. Department of Labor to track and list companies that move call center jobs overseas. Those companies would then be ineligible for any direct or indirect federal loans or loan guarantees for five years.

All of these are heady incentives for companies to bring offshore call center jobs back to the U.S., though the bill's passage seems uncertain, as similar legislation has failed in the past.

In the meantime, the Philippines government and the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in that nation are monitoring developments. For its part, the BPAP believes that market forces will dictate the industry’s future, said the AP.

“At the end, it will not be politics but it will be the bottom line,” Crisostomo said.

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Transport and Communications (DOT) attributes the continued growth of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in the country to the confidence of solutions providers in the skills of Filipinos.

“Opening a new site for a business that employs young Filipinos in always a refreshing opportunity,” DOTC Undersecretary Rene K. Limcaoco said during the recent opening of the 5th office of the NCO Group Inc. in Sta. Mesa.

“Just as refreshing as knowing, and actually feeling, that we are in new age of hope in the Philippines, a new era in governance and politics, a period of growing confidence and faith in our public institutions,” Limcaoco said.

US-based NCO has other BPO sites at the Clark Economic Zone, Fort Bonifacio, Marikina and in Quezon City.

According to a Business Processing Association of the Philippines 2011 report, the IT-BPO industry today is the second largest contributor to the local economy, next to remittance inflows from Filipinos living and working overseas.

The report further states that the BPO sector contributed close to $9 billion in export revenues last year, representing an approximately 4.8 percent share of the country’s GDP.

This year, the target is $11 billion and by 2016, it is estimated to be at the same level of OFW remittances at $25 billion.

NCO started its operations in the Philippines in 2003 employing 35 staff. Today, it has about 8,000 call center agents and staff spread out in its five sites.

“NCO’s commitment to the country’s resources is a terrific testament to the ability, skill and competence that we, in the Philippines, have,” Limcaoco said.

The country has overtaken India to become the world’s biggest provider of call center agents.

US company ADP acquires Randstad's Indian payroll business

ADP, a leading provider of human resource outsourcing, payroll services, tax and compliance services, benefits administration and accounts payable solutions, today announced that it has acquired the Indian payroll business of Randstad Holding, from its Indian subsidiary Ma Foi Randstad.

"This acquisition supports ADP's broader strategy to expand its global footprint in human resources business process outsourcing (HR BPO) across large and developing markets," ADP, a provider of human resource outsourcing, payroll, tax and compliance services, said in a statement Monday.

Ma Foi Consulting Solutions offers managed payroll services and social benefits administration to clients across India through a fully customized payroll engine. The company uses this platform to serve approximately 350 multinational and domestic clients.

"ADP's acquisition of Ma Foi Consulting Solutions gives us a direct presence in the large and developing Indian market for HR BPO. This acquisition also enhances our ability to meet the needs of our large multinational clients with operations in India," said Mark Benjamin, president, ADP Employer Services International.

Significant growth in BPO sector seen

The country’s business process outsourcing (BPO) sector will continue to grow significantly over the next 12 months despite efforts by American policymakers to discourage the “offshoring” of work to countries like the Philippines to address high unemployment in the United States.

Canada-based research firm XMG Global said in its annual “predictions” report that outsourcing would remain a key option for many companies in the US and Europe looking to cut costs and make operations more efficient.

“Offshoring is a manifestation of an ongoing economic evolution that will not go away,” XMG said.

“As for the reintroduction of the Anti-Offshore Bill due to the upcoming US elections, XMG believes this is purely election-year politics and will not dampen globalization of services,” the firm added.

The company said the outsourcing sectors of countries like the Philippines and India were likely to grow as much as 20 percent this year.

“With the lingering effects and lessons of the 2008 global recession still fresh among enterprises, a new genre of corporations will continue to look offshore to seek new ways to reduce operating costs and maximize productivity levels,” XMG said.

The firm said the latest anti-outsourcing proposal would not be enough to deter companies from setting up shop in destinations where labor costs were considerably lower and productivity rates higher.

The Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) said in its 2011 report that the BPO industry was now the second-biggest contributor to the local economy next to remittance inflows from overseas Filipinos.

The report further stated that the BPO sector contributed close to $9 billion in export revenues last year, representing a 4.8-percent share of the country’s GDP. The target for 2012 was set at $11 billion.

By 2016, the industry group expected the country’s BPO revenues to hit the $25-billion mark, or a 10-percent share in the global market and at the same level as OFW remittances.

Standard Chartered To Trim BPO Vendors, Save $7 Million

Thursday, January 19, 2012:  Scope International Pvt Ltd, wholly-owned subsidiary of Standard Chartered Bank, is in a hope to save $7 million by trimming its IT vendor base to three or four by the end of March. Jaya Vaidhyanathan, executive vice president and head of Chennai Technology and Strategic Transformation, Global Shared Service Centres (GSSC) said that IT service and vendors have been critically examined and they will continue to handle in-house core IT services that are IP (intellectual property) driven and critical for banking operations. Whereas, the commodity services will be parcelled to couple of big vendors instead of having multiple small vendors. As per Vaidhyanathan, the technology division employees somewhere around 4,500 people out of which nearly 35 percent belonged to the vendors. And, 60 per cent of Standard Chartered's IT needs are met in-house including the bank's core banking solution (CBS), while the balance is outsourced.

She also said that the company is in the last phase of its vendor consolidation activity and after consolidation there will be three or four big vendors. The hiring of new service providers and the firing of smaller players will happen by the end of the first quarter of the current calendar year. The Chennai centre was started about 12 years ago as Standard Chartered's captive back office and it took advantage of the cost arbitrage India offered. But now it has grown to become the fulcrum of bank's IT operations and the biggest GSSC for the bank.

The total annual payout to vendors turns out to be somewhere around $70 million and 10 per cent of that can be saved through vendor consolidation initiative. The company is also planning to phase out some IT activities whose benefit does not justify its cost.

Cinven acquires LPO CPA Global; Freshfields, DLA, Travers advise

European private equity firm Cinven has acquired legal outsourcing company CPA Global, from its shareholders including Intermediate Capital Group (ICG), according to media reports.
 

Legalweek reports DLA Piper, which also advised CPA on the 2010 transaction, is now representing CPA's management on the proposed sale.
 
Travers Smith is advising CPA with a team led by Corporate Head Chris Hale, who also advised CPA and ICG two years ago on the management buyout and acquisition by ICG.
 
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringeris advising Cinven with a team led by Corporate Partners David Higgins and Adrian Maguire along with Finance Partner Sean Pierce.
 
While financial details for the deal are undisclosed the transaction comes two years after Intermediate Capital Group acquired a minority stake in the company for £400 million. 
As part of the 2010 deal ICG took a 47 per cent stake while the management team, led by chief executive Peter Sewell, retained a 22 per cent share, reports M & A Deals.
 
 
CPA Global provides clients in sectors such as telecoms and pharmaceuticals with IP management services and software to help protect rights and maintain value.
 

 According to the press release, the transaction is subject to the approval of a Scheme of Arrangement in Jersey and regulatory clearances, and is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2012.

Olswang shortlists LPO providers in preparation for new panel

Top 50 firm to appoint three-strong panel of low-cost providers to respond to client calls for value

Olswang is set to appoint a panel of legal process outsourcers (LPOs) to carry out low-value document review work for the firm.

The firm has identified a shortlist of seven LPOs with a view to selecting three to act as its preferred providers 
when required.

Olswang has previously only used LPOs for document management work on contentious cases on an ad hoc basis. However, the firm has now taken the view that it would be better served by having a panel of LPOs in place to call on when required.

Chief executive David Stewart commented: “We  have identified a panel of LPOs to ensure that we have a better understanding of the sector and to help us  establish good working relationships with our preferred providers. Our aim is to have real and innovative relationships  with a range of LPOs, as the market continues to require us to deliver more for less, and LPOs are a part of the way we can do that.”

Mid-market firms are facing increasing pressure to demonstrate that they have the capability to take on large mandates and maintain competitive pricing, with Travers Smith outlining plans to appoint a three-strong panel of organisations to outsource legal work 
to in anticipation of growing client demand last spring.

The firm is still deciding on the make-up of the panel, which will comprise either three LPOs, three regional firms or a combination of the two.

Olswang held its annual partnership conference in November last year in Madrid, with the firm outlining its strategic direction for 2012, which will see it focus on integrating its international platform, growing its technology practice globally and capturing more work from Africa, India and the Middle East, where the firm does not currently have any offices. India losing choice nation status for ITeS cos

India has enjoyed the status of being the most sought-after destination for setting up of units in information technology enabled services (ITeS) and business process outsourcing (BPO) sectors for some time now.
But the prominence as the dominant IT/ITeS hub due to demographic dividend, favourable environment and necessary infrastructure is fast fading away as there is a flight of units, small and big, to destinations such as the Philippines if the Eco Pulse Study conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) is any indication.

Driving forces

The study, Sustaining India's IT/ITeS Leadership, attributes macroeconomic and sectoral conditions to the flight of the industry, especially from Hyderabad and Bangalore.
The study said investment in world-class facilities, extensive talent development and other initiatives created a cost disadvantage of 10-15 per cent compared to other emerging destinations.
A multitude of reasons including ease of doing business, availability of abundant English speaking workforce at lower wages, better infrastructure and government incentives had become driving forces for the flight of the units, according to Assocham Secretary General D. S. Rawat.
While the country basked in the glory of its status and reason that its demographic dividend allowed it to further improve its position, the ground reality was fast changing, he said.

Reasons for shift

Many ITeS/BPO firms, across all sizes, are shifting their bases from Hyderabad and Bangalore to the Philippines and other countries.
The trend was not yet noticed in the National Capital Region but Pune is expected to witness similar flight soon. The reasons for the shift is diminishing employable talent pool, high cost of doing business owing to inefficiencies in power, transport, security and other concerns. The study said the firms were finding it difficult to retain suitably trained employees coupled with deficient infrastructure, law and order and shrinking margins.

STPs network

Assocham, however, identified widening the software technology parks (STPs) network to semi-urban and rural areas and extending the income-tax benefit to STP units would become the single most effective policy measure to stem the flight of the IT/BPO firms away from the country. This would address most of the immediate concerns of the sector and ensures proliferation of industry further.
The STPs provided basic infrastructural support and state-of-the-art plug and play facilities allowing new and smaller firms to set up operations at minimal investments.
The government needed to act immediately in view of the criticality of the issue, the study said.

Asian BPO markets to neutralize US move vs. outsourcing – ILO

Other opportunities in Asia await Filipino business process outsourcing (BPO) workers in case the US Congress passes a bill that keeps American companies from farming out non-core operations overseas, the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) Philippine director said Thursday.

ILO’s Lawrence Jeff Johnson noted an increasing number of Philippine-based BPO companies now servicing Asia.

“The Philippines is in a unique position with its widely educated labor force that continues to grow. I don’t believe that US is the only BPO market,” Johnson told reporters at the launch of ILO-Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Knowledge Center and the Department of Labor and Employment in Manila.

Instead, the Philippine government should use the US legislative measure to refocus on generating jobs for highly skilled Filipino workers — in contact centers — that may be initially displaced, according to ILO official.

Filipino workers have wider job opportunities because of their sound education and skills in spoken English, Johnson said, echoing the praises attached to agents working for Philippine-based BPO companies.

The US legislative measure is a mere adjunct to addressing America’s financial and economic problems. Johnson said

US House Bill 3596 or the “Call Centers and Consumers Protection Bill” encourages American companies to farm out their non-core business within the US — a practice known as insourcing — and penalizes those giving jobs overseas.
In an interview Wednesday, President Benigno Aquino III said he believes that President Barack Obama is supporting HB 3596 in relation to the upcoming US presidential elections. “We have to take into account that this is election year, perhaps those are election-related statements,” Aquino noted.

On the ILO-DOLE knowledge center, Johnson explained it was designed to fill in the knowledge gap of Filipinos on labor issues, considering that ILO has a wide range of statistics, research materials, operational and policy tools, market information and analysis.

“We are willing and eager to reach out to our constituents, the government through DOLE, employers and workers’ organizations as well as to students and faculty in the academia,” said Johnson.

Around the world are students “who do not have a clear understanding of the most basic concepts, definitions and policies to help recognize and address challenges in the world of work,” he added

Sri Lanka's first International Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) seminar in Feb

Sri Lanka's first International Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) seminar titled Outsourcing versus Restructuring, organised by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will be held on February 9 and 10 at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo, said BASL President Shibly Aziz.

The BASL President said outsourcing has for long become a commonly recognised way for organizations to save on resources and costs. While, with millions of ongoing business processes and re-engineering projects, there are considerable advantages. Many industries have in the meantime started to look at the overall outsourcing trend with a more critical eye. The potential for market growth and cost savings at the same time cannot be ignored and offers promising returns.

The current growth rate of the global LPO market is estimated at 34 percent per annum, expecting a market size of around US $ 3 billion by 2015.

However, there is criticism over confidentiality, attorney client privilege and ethical issues when looking at the global market place and minimum guaranteed legal requirements in many jurisdictions, the BASL President added.

The BASL President emphasised that Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) offers to provide more routine legal services at attractive rates, leaving the more complex legal work to specialized law firms and lawyers.

Many LPO providers have since started operations in Canada, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, US and many others. Initially, sources predicted that the global market place would see a transfer of routine legal work from the US/UK markets towards Asia, but in the meantime, these markets saw growing development in this sector internally and many firms responded to the challenge by reviewing their own billing structures.

As the latest global surveys indicate Sri Lanka is rapidly rising in the ITBPO firmament. With a highly skilled and resourceful workforce, a significant cost advantage relative to other regional players, well-developed infrastructure and generous government assistance, Sri Lanka represents unique outsourcing opportunities, the BASL President said.

Retailers to bank on BPO, tourism for 2012 growth

While 2011 proved to be a challenging year for most sectors in the retail industry, leaders remain optimistic that 2012 would be  better with the continued promotion of Cebu as an attractive investment destination.
Top officials of the Philippine Retailers Association Cebu Chapter said lower  purchasing power of the consumers brought about by the economic crisis in the United States and Europe affected business.
Nevertheless, PRA Cebu chapter chairman Jay Aldeguer and president Melanie Ng  said  the retail industry still experienced about 7 percent  to 10 percent growth this year because of  the  retailers ability to improve and sustain their market share.

“This year has been  very challenging for the local retail market but I must say that the retailers have responded positively.  Despite the challenges,  Cebuano retailers  put in a lot of resources, technologically, financially and product wise, to improve their various brands and businesses. This again goes to show the resilient nature of the Cebuano entrepreneur,” Ng said.
Ng said  the food and the beauty and wellness sectors  did well in 2011.
Jane Ong of Leona’s Bakeshop said retailers in the bakery sector are showing many new concepts.
“The market has become choosy and demanding, so we will have to continue to be more innovative to keep our customers,” said Ong.

Jonathan Ho of Mandaue Foam, Inc. said they are promoting local products to make  people more aware of the presence of quality local furniture.
“Most of what we have now that are sold in the department stores are made in China or other countries. We’d like   people to see that we also have good quality products that are competitively priced here,” Ho said.

The retail sector growth has been spurred by the the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in Cebu as well as  affordable air fares that encouraged travel and tourism.
Budget airlines have helped increase the number of domestic arrivals in Cebu. Foreign tourists are also continuously coming to Cebu.

The retail industry has also had many new entrants in the Cebu market as seen in new brands of clothing lines,  electronics and gadget brands.
The significant growth in gadgets and electronics is attributed to the growing popularity of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

“Cebu is a very attractive place to invest. We are investor-friendly. Other than having a reliable supply of human resource, setting up a new business in Cebu has proven to be cost effective for outsourcing companies. This has proven to heavily aid the growth of the retail industry in Cebu,” Ng said.
Next year  will be a more promising year,  according to Ng and Aldeguer. Their optimism is based on  the increasing number of BPOs,  malls,  hotels opening and  flights.

“With these we can expect an increase in retail growth next year. Retailers will, however, have to make sure that we respond to market needs and wants. We have to make sure we offer the right product at the right price in order to be effective,” said Ng.
According to Aldeguer, e restored confidence in the market is partly due to the  advocacy of the administration and local government units to do things the right way.  This  has given the market the boost that it needs to aid and promote a positive economy.

PRA national chairman Bernie Liu of Golden ABC said that 2012 will be  exciting for the country and all it’s industries.
“At the macro level, Asia is the newest. Within ten to 20 years, Asia will be the growth region dominated by China and India. Everyone’s looking at Asia and we are in the middle of these new markets. It is both a challenge and a curse,” said Liu.

“It is a challenge and a blessing as the middle class is expected to expand more. And  curse because we are not the only one looking at Asia, so we are competing with everyone. It’s an opportunity for local brands to level up, the market is already aware of the global trend,” Liu added.
To compete, one has to know one’s  customers well and offer what the customers want.
“You cannot be everything to everyone. Focus on a market in order to compete,” said Liu.
